Well, virtual reality is exactly what its name suggests. It changes your reality and allows you to enter a virtual environment, which may be drastically different than the real one you are in.
Not only that, virtual reality also allows you to interact in your virtual environment, and do everything you could do if it was real. This is believed to be as exciting as it sounds, and although you may have only got an idea by now based on the information we mentioned, virtual reality actually has a lot to talk about.
Expected to be the next big thing
Many people, including some technology experts, are of the opinion that virtual reality is the next big thing, not only in the technology industry, but for all the industries as a whole to a considerable extent. This is due to the fact that there has never been anything like VR (virtual reality) ever before. You obviously had those 3D televisions, images, and whatnot, but they don’t even come near to what VR offers.
In fact, VR is arguably the first industry to go from zero to such a great height so fast. Right from when the first prototypes of the VR headsets were released, there has been an astoundingly fast improvement in the industry. As of now, some of the major technology giants of the world are competing with each other in a rather highly intense way to dominate what may turn out to be one of the most profitable industries ever.
From Google to HTC to Samsung, all are coming with their own highly sophisticated VR headsets that promise to change the world in some way. In fact, Google and Samsung have already hit the market with some relatively basic VR headsets. As these headsets offer a rather basic VR experience, they are also available for a considerably cheap price on the market.
Surprisingly, however, even such headsets offering just a basic VR experience have got quite popular in a fairly short period of time. We can only imagine how the market will respond to the more sophisticated VR headsets set to release this year, which actually promise to reveal the real potential of virtual reality.
The price difference
Well, we think it’s also worth pointing out the price difference between the basic VR headsets currently available on the market and the high-end and highly sophisticated, complete ones that are set to release this year. This is primarily because we want to tell our readers that the very advanced VR headsets, that may actually offer an experience VR promises and is capable of, may not be affordable for everyone, just as what Tathastu Information Technology (a major Indian IT company) expected.
In fact, the price difference even between the VR headsets currently available on the market is quite significant. For instance, the Google Cardboard is priced under $20, while the Samsung Gear VR, a much more advanced VR headset, is being offered around $100.
However, these prices are obviously not at all disappointing when compared to how expensively the advanced VR headsets may be priced. If the estimates are anything to go by, it seems that most of the advanced VR headsets that are expected to hit the market this year are going to be priced at upwards of $500.
This is probably the reason this year is also considered to be a litmus test for the VR industry, as many things will get clear based on the response these advanced VR headsets receive from the market. Hence, 2016 is definitely going to be a big year for the VR industry, and we will get to know whether all the hype around VR and the advanced headsets actually helps the industry grow or not.
What VR offers as of now?
It’s important to understand what the current VR headsets on the market offer to find out whether VR would excite you or not. So, coming to Google Cardboard, it’s a pretty basic VR headset. What it does is simply allows you to watch moves, play games, and so other stuff that you do on your smartphone, but while making everything very real-like.
So for example, if you are playing a game, you will feel that instead of the game’s virtual player, you yourself are the player. This would work with any 3D app you can run on your smartphone. However, as the name suggests, it really is made of cardboard. Surprisingly, though, users mention that it’s a lot of fun.
However, it’s pretty much a toy and you can’t really do much with it, except install 3D apps and have some fun.
The Samsung Gear VR, on the other hand, is drastically different. It offers much more than Google Cardboard, and this obviously justifies the huge price difference between them. Using this VR device, you can explore the sun, moon, go on different planets, reach the bottom of a huge ocean, watch a movie from a forest or any place of your choice, and so on.
What VR promises to offer in the future?
As mentioned earlier, the advanced VR headsets set to release this year promise a lot more than what the headsets currently available on the market do. This was actually proved at the CES in Las Vegas, when the prototypes of all these advanced VR devices were on display and up for demos.
These advanced headsets would actually allow you to do everything VR promises, including interacting with the virtual environment in a meaningful way. Sure, the headsets are a little bulky and aren’t even believed to be very good for your eyes, but the users may choose to care less about these things when they experience something they have never come across ever before.
Use of virtual reality
Although we have covered how VR is and will be used for entertainment purposes, there’s actually a lot more to it. First things first, the education industry may witness a significant change in how it works, as students may no longer be forced to visit the library for doing research for preparing their projects.
They may instead be able to visit different museums, places, and anything else the project is about in person, and learn about them in a much more exciting and practical way.
Similarly, professionals of all fields may benefit immensely if VR manages to deliver. They may no longer have to go through complicated and rigorous training programs, and similarly, the companies wouldn’t have to incur huge expenses for training them as well. Instead, they may simply enter a virtual environment exactly similar to their training environment, and train themselves by interacting with the virtual training environment.
There are a lot more things VR may affect, although these two seem to be some of the first to get affected. In fact, a few years down the line, when VR manages to work at its full potential, it may probably end up changing every single industry in the world.
A final word
Facebook’s Oculus Rift, one of the advanced high-end VR headsets set to release in a few months is open for pre-orders. Despite being priced around the $600 mark, it has attracted a surprisingly large amount of sales.
That being said, you can’t really deny VR being the next big thing. However, how positively or negatively it affects the world is something we cannot really be sure of. Well, only time will tell, we guess.
